Advanced Video Provider: YouTube

Overview

# Top

The LifterLMS Advanced Videos YouTube integration adds the ability to utilize YouTube embedded videos within LifterLMS lessons to require video progression, customize the video player, and more.

While YouTube is the most inexpensive provider included with LifterLMS Advanced Videos (completely free), it is also the least flexible and secure.

How Do I Prevent my Students from Fast-Forwarding the Lesson Videos?

# Top

Many course creators want to ensure that their students watch video lessons from start to finish to earn the course credit. The LifterLMS Advanced Videos extension can be combined with the Require video completion feature to provide a powerful way to achieve this by disabling the video player’s controls, removing the seek bar, and preventing fast-forwarding.

This guide walks you through configuring this setting for YouTube, Vimeo, and Wistia videos.

Locating the Video Integration Settings

First, navigate to the correct settings area in your WordPress dashboard. These settings are configured separately for each video provider.

  1. From your WordPress dashboard, navigate to LifterLMS > Settings.
  2. Click on the “Integrations” tab.
  3. Here, you will see a list of available integrations. Click on the video provider you wish to configure, such as YouTube, Vimeo, or Wistia.

 YouTube

If you are using YouTube to serve your video content, then you must first enable the YouTube integration to access its settings.

Check the Enable / Disable box to activate the Advanced Videos features for YouTube.

To prevent fast-forwarding, you must check the Disable Controls option. When this is active, users will only see a play/pause button. The timeline/scrubber, volume controls, and other options will be hidden, preventing skipping ahead.

Once you have made the necessary changes, click the Save Changes button in the top-right corner. This will immediately disable player control for all courses that use this video player.

After making the changes, you can verify that the video control features have been disabled on the website. Here’s how the video would look before disabling controls:

After disabling controls, students see a custom, simplified player. They can play and pause, but the seek bar is no longer available. This prevents students from skipping ahead in the course content.

Vimeo

The process for disabling video controls on Vimeo is similar to the one described above. (Please note that some features require a Vimeo Pro (or higher) account.)

To disable the video controls on your LifterLMS site, navigate to LifterLMS > Settings > Integrations > Vimeo and check the Enable / Disable box to activate the Advanced Videos features for Vimeo.

Once the integration is enabled, you can configure the following settings:

  • Disable Controls: Check this box to hide all player controls. This will hide the seek bar and prevent students from skipping forward in the video. Please note that this feature requires a Vimeo Pro or Business account.
  • Disable Playback Speed: This button hides the option for students to change the video playback speed.
  • Disable Title / Byline / Portrait: Hides video meta-information for a cleaner look.

After checking the “Disable Controls” box, click the Save Changes button in the top-right corner of your screen.

Wistia

The Wistia integration offers granular control over the player bar and video playback controls.

Navigate to LifterLMS > Settings > Integrations > Wistia and check the Enable / Disable box to activate the Advanced Videos features for Wistia.

After enabling the integration, you can configure the following settings to prevent fast-forwarding in the videos:

  • Disable Playbar: This setting disables the playbar, which includes the playhead, current time, and scrubbing functionality. This is the recommended setting to prevent fast-forwarding while keeping other controls potentially visible.
  • Disable Controls: This is a more comprehensive option that hides all player controls (though users can still click the video to play/pause).

Once you have made the necessary changes to your configuration, click the Save Changes button in the top-right corner. This will immediately apply the changes to all the courses on your site.
