What VdoCipher Is and Why Video Piracy Costs Course Creators Revenue

Even when a course lives behind a paid membership, there’s still a real risk of piracy. Course creators put a lot of work into creating video content, and there are tools people can use to get a hold of that video if they really want to. Sidharth Jain from VdoCipher joins to show what VdoCipher offers to protect that video, and how it integrates with LifterLMS.
Sidharth Jain: VdoCipher provides video streaming solutions for businesses to stream video on their site or app in the most secure, smooth, and affordable way possible.
Most course creators are premium content providers who put video behind a paid membership, but free tools and downloaders can still grab that video and turn it into lost revenue through piracy. A video stream through the VdoCipher player can’t be downloaded using any internet plugin or downloader software. Tools like Video DownloadHelper or IDM can easily grab almost any video streamed through a player like YouTube or Vimeo. None of those tools work against a VdoCipher stream.
How DRM Encryption Stops Video Downloads
There are several layers to that security, and the first is encrypted DRM video streaming. With a player like YouTube, the complete data stream from server to player is a direct transfer with no encryption. Other players offer encryption under names like RTMP or HLS, but the key exchange mechanism behind those technologies is fairly open, and a determined tool or person can still hack into it.
VdoCipher doesn’t rely on RTMP or HLS encryption. It uses a high-security DRM video stream instead. DRM stands for digital rights management, and VdoCipher uses industry-standard encryption protocols so the entire data transfer from server to player is encrypted, combining DRMs like Widevine and FairPlay with some of VdoCipher’s own proprietary technology.
Large media companies like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu protect their content with the same class of DRM. How Video URL Protection and Dynamic Watermarking Stop Piracy
Encryption alone prevents downloading, but it doesn’t stop someone from copying a video’s URL and playing it outside your website. That’s where VdoCipher’s backend licensing and authentication technology comes in. How VdoCipher Compares to Vimeo and Adds Geo-Restriction Security
Many premium course businesses use Vimeo for video hosting, but Vimeo has no DRM encryption, so a tool like Video DownloadHelper can grab a Vimeo video easily. That isn’t possible with a VdoCipher stream.
Beyond encryption and authentication, VdoCipher also offers IP and geo-restriction. A video can be limited to play only inside a specific country, or only from inside a company’s own IP range, which is useful for internal corporate training. VdoCipher supports several levels of authentication a business can layer on for higher security.
VdoCipher also functions as a full video streaming package from server to player, including an HTML5 player with playback speed control, multilingual subtitles, and quality options that adapt automatically to a viewer’s connection speed. Uploading Videos and Tracking Analytics in VdoCipher
VdoCipher includes its own video dashboard where you can upload video directly from your computer, or import it from Dropbox, Google Drive, a URL, Vimeo Pro, or Wistia. Anyone with a large existing video library on something like Amazon S3, their own server, or Vimeo Pro can transfer that library into VdoCipher through the import feature.
Once a video is uploaded, VdoCipher encrypts it separately for the different levels of encryption Android, iOS, and desktop each require, and once that processing finishes, the video is ready to embed on a WordPress site through VdoCipher’s WordPress embed module.
VdoCipher provides detailed analytics on a daily basis, including number of views, storage used, bandwidth consumed, total loads, total unique viewers, total seconds played, the most popular browsers and operating systems, and the most popular videos by load or view count. VdoCipher has also released a beta real-time analytics feature that shows, on a live basis, which cities and countries a video is currently playing from and how much of the video each viewer has watched.
Configuring the VdoCipher Plugin and Choosing a Player Theme
VdoCipher’s WordPress plugin is publicly available in the WordPress plugin directory, and it has a working LifterLMS integration that has been tested against LifterLMS courses, membership content, and engagements.
After installing the plugin, the settings page includes an API secret key field. VdoCipher’s backend authentication and viewer-specific watermarking both pull user data like ID and email from the WordPress backend, so each account needs its own secret key, which is available from the config section of a VdoCipher account by solving a captcha. The settings page also includes a player height and width, which can be left on auto, and a player version setting, where it’s recommended to use the latest version VdoCipher has released.
The plugin settings also include a choice of custom player themes with different colors and designs, including one styled to look similar to Vimeo’s player. A business can also design and add an entirely custom theme of its own. One example theme strips out the seek bar entirely, useful for content meant to be watched straight through, like a live-style video, without letting viewers skip ahead. A theme ID can be applied globally to every video through the plugin setting, or to a single video individually.
Setting Up Dynamic Watermarking Parameters
The watermarking section of the plugin lets you fetch details like IP address, email address, or user address into the overlay. An IP-based watermark is one common example. An alpha setting controls transparency: raising it toward one makes the watermark darker, lowering it toward 0.1 makes it nearly transparent. A color code setting changes the watermark’s color, and a separate setting controls its size.
Skip and interval settings control how often the watermark appears, since a watermark showing constantly can be distracting. For example, a watermark can be set to stay hidden for two minutes and then show for ten seconds. VdoCipher provides documentation and sample code for these customizations, and can provide more based on a specific setup.
Adding a VdoCipher Video to a LifterLMS Course
Configuring VdoCipher’s basic settings takes five to ten minutes. From there, adding a video to a LifterLMS course is simple. Inside the WordPress block editor, on a LifterLMS course or lesson, adding a secure VdoCipher video is a matter of using a shortcode with a video ID pulled from the VdoCipher dashboard, where every uploaded video is assigned its own ID.
That ID can go into a plain shortcode block, or into a dedicated VdoCipher block in the block editor, where the video ID gets pasted in directly with no shortcode needed. Publishing the lesson pushes the secure video into the LifterLMS course.
Once embedded, the video plays with the DRM protection in place, so it can’t be downloaded, plus any watermark configured, such as the logged-in viewer’s name and IP address, and a small VdoCipher copyright mark. The entire integration takes roughly twenty minutes and includes every security feature available, along with the option to change the player theme per video if needed.
How VdoCipher’s Infrastructure Works and Who Uses It
On the infrastructure side, VdoCipher runs primarily on Amazon’s servers and CDN, combined with Google and Akamai CDN as backup, so that if one CDN has a problem in a particular geography, another can pick up the load.
When a video is uploaded, it goes to VdoCipher’s Amazon servers, where the encrypted version and the raw original are kept separately. The raw video is never exposed through a URL; only the encrypted version is ever exposed, which is what keeps it secure. VdoCipher handles transcoding and encryption automatically for the different formats and sizes each device and connection speed requires.
With customers across 34 or more countries, combining Amazon, Google, and Akamai CDN ensures video plays reliably worldwide, with secure licensing and authentication as the final step before playback.
VdoCipher has customers across six continents, including education companies with more than 100,000 viewers. VdoCipher has also been used to release fresh feature films online directly, including the sequel to the film Man From Earth, along with serial content and a wide range of educational video across finance and coaching. Around 30 percent of VdoCipher’s customers publish through WordPress.
VdoCipher Pricing for Storage and Bandwidth
VdoCipher plans start at $99 per year and go up to roughly $1,900 per year depending on usage, and every plan, including the starter plan, includes the full set of security features: DRM, watermarking, and authentication. Higher-priced plans add more storage and bandwidth, along with more customization and support.
Storage is simply what gets uploaded and encoded for different devices. Bandwidth is based on how much of a video is actually played: a one-hour, 300 MB lecture played in full ten times by students consumes 3 GB of bandwidth, the same way any video server bills for bandwidth.

Why Chromium Does Not Support VdoCipher Playback
An attendee named Reuben asked about browser compatibility after testing the plugin. VdoCipher worked correctly in Firefox and Chrome, but streams didn’t open in Chromium, the open-source browser Chrome is built on.
Sidharth Jain: On desktop, if a site runs over HTTPS, playback in Chrome, Opera, and Firefox happens through HTML5 with full encryption in place. Chromium doesn’t include the licensed DRM protocols needed to play a secure video, so it won’t work there, aside from an outdated Flash-based path. Chrome, Firefox, and Opera cover the large majority of desktop viewers, and Safari has its own HTML5 DRM integration. Android Chrome, iOS Safari, and iOS Chrome all play VdoCipher video correctly on mobile as well.
Whether VdoCipher’s Watermarking Complies With GDPR
Reuben also asked a GDPR question, since the European Union’s data protection law was a concern for his site. His question: if all watermarking is turned off entirely, with no IP address and no username shown, is any user data still transferred to or processed by VdoCipher, or is it simply a blocked video stream with nothing transmitted?
Sidharth Jain: This is a common question. Watermarking is entirely optional and off by default; nothing is turned on unless it’s explicitly enabled in the plugin settings. Even when the watermark is turned on, a viewer’s data isn’t sent to VdoCipher’s servers. The integration happens entirely on the front end of your own site, where the plugin fetches the viewer’s email address and user ID locally and displays them as an overlay. That data never reaches VdoCipher’s servers, whether or not the watermark is enabled, and the watermark itself can always be turned off completely.
Whether VdoCipher Works With a Custom Player and Slows Down Performance
An attendee named Bill asked three questions. First, whether a custom player, such as one built with Camtasia’s smart player, could work with VdoCipher’s service.
Sidharth Jain: VdoCipher’s player has two parts. Bill’s second question was about performance: with encryption and licensing logic layered on, how does VdoCipher avoid becoming a bottleneck?
Sidharth Jain: Encryption happens only once, at upload, when VdoCipher creates three separate encrypted files sized for desktop, Android, and iOS, each the same size as the original raw video with no size increase. After that, playback works the same as any non-secure video; on the server, it would even look like a plain MP4 file, just an encrypted one.
VdoCipher has optimized its encoding and streaming to run smoothly even in regions like India and Africa where internet connections are slower, and its analytics run on very small data sizes, well below the video itself, so they add no meaningful load.
Whether You Can Self-Host VdoCipher or Restrict Playback to a Company IP
Bill’s last question was about middleware: since VdoCipher hosts video on its own infrastructure as a subscription, is there an option for a business that already hosts on Amazon S3 to apply VdoCipher’s technology there instead?
Sidharth Jain: VdoCipher’s stack includes more than S3 storage; it also covers transcoding and CDN delivery. There’s an offering that doesn’t require using VdoCipher’s own servers, but it’s complex and requires coding resources on the customer’s side to integrate, so VdoCipher only builds it for very large customers, such as major media companies, where the setup and coding work is justified by scale.
Bill returned with a follow-up: companies building internal training sometimes need the content to stay entirely inside their own network. How would a company go about restricting a video to their own IP address?
Sidharth Jain: Every playback is authenticated through the plugin’s API, and that authentication supports IP restriction using a CIDR block, the range notation most companies already use for their network. In a live demo of the plugin’s settings, entering a CIDR block into the allowed IP field restricted the video to only play from inside that range.
What Is Next for VdoCipher’s Video Security
Looking ahead, VdoCipher is working on more advanced player customization, including a planned drag-and-drop player builder, and expanding its real-time analytics so course creators can learn more about how their viewers are engaging with a video. VdoCipher is also exploring WordPress-based watch-time restrictions, such as capping total viewing time on a course regardless of its length.
