Why LifterLMS Rebuilt Its Quiz System From The Ground Up
Advanced Quizzes is part of the Infinity Bundle, which also includes a weekly office hour call and other advanced LifterLMS features. It shipped about a week before this webinar, and by the time of this recording four small updates had already gone out with bug fixes and improvements.
Building a quiz system from the ground up is a big challenge. A lot of LifterLMS users used to reach for third-party quiz plugins because building one from scratch is hard, but stacking plugins from different companies adds more variables for something to go wrong. The goal here was one platform that owns its own quiz architecture instead of stitching plugins together.
This is version one, built by LifterLMS developer Thomas, and it’s positioned to keep evolving alongside WordPress and the block editor. Assignments is next on the Infinity Bundle roadmap.
What Happens When A Student Takes A LifterLMS Advanced Quizzes Assessment
To show what the finished product looks like, Chris demoed a simple course called Leadership with one section, three lessons, and three access plans. He enrolled a test student, Susan, in a free 30-day access plan and opened the first lesson, which has an 11-question quiz attached.
That quiz was set to unlimited attempts with a 65 percent minimum passing grade, and it walks through every new question type in Advanced Quizzes so you can see what each one looks like on the front end before building your own.
Multiple Choice Questions With Multiple Correct Answers
Multiple Choice is one of LifterLMS’s built-in question types, included free in core, not part of Advanced Quizzes itself. In the course builder’s quiz editor, you add a question, type your options, and mark the one that’s correct.
Advanced Quizzes adds a setting called multiple correct answers to Multiple Choice and Picture Choice questions. Turn it on and a student has to select every correct option, not just one, before the answer counts as correct. For example, a question asking for the best WordPress LMS could require selecting both LifterLMS and LifterLMS Advanced Quizzes as the two correct choices.
Picture Choice Questions For Visual Learners
Picture Choice works the same way as Multiple Choice, except the options are images instead of text. Upload pictures or pull them from your media library, and students click the image that answers the question instead of reading a list of text options.
Picture Choice also supports the multiple correct answers setting, so you can require a student to select more than one image, such as picking out every photo that shows a mountain.
True Or False Questions With Inline Text Formatting
True or False questions ask a student to judge a single statement. In the builder, an inline text editor lets you bold, underline, or otherwise emphasize specific words in the question itself, and you can open up an optional description area to add more context, a link, an image, or a video below the main question.
That description area is useful any time a question needs more than a single line, like clarifying instructions or linking out to further reading before the student answers.
Fill In The Blank Questions With Automatic Or Manual Grading
Fill in the Blank lets a student type an answer directly into the question text. In the builder, three or more underscores in a row automatically become a blank, or you can use the toolbar’s blank tool to insert one.
A question can have more than one blank. Separate the correct answers for each blank with a pipe character, the vertical line on your keyboard, in the order the blanks appear. You can also resize each blank to match the expected answer length.
Fill in the Blank supports automatic grading by default. Leave the correct answer field blank instead, and the question switches to manual grading, which is useful any time the acceptable answer is too open-ended to grade by exact match.
Reorder Items Questions For Sequencing Skills
Reorder Items presents a list of text items in a randomized order, and the student drags them into what they believe is the correct sequence. It’s a good fit for any process, checklist, or timeline where order matters, like the order Chris walked through for building an online course: build community first, pilot the idea, develop the curriculum, then choose your tools and technology last.
Picture Reorder Questions For Visual Sequencing
Picture Reorder is the image version of Reorder Items. Upload a set of pictures, arrange them in the correct order while building the question, and LifterLMS displays them to the student in a random order for them to drag back into place, such as arranging a set of portraits from youngest to oldest.
Short Answer Questions For Manually Graded Responses
Short Answer gives students an open text field for a brief written response, and every Short Answer question requires manual grading. It’s a good fit for something like an elevator pitch exercise, where a student writes a one or two sentence answer following a simple formula: who you help, the result you help them get, and the method you use to get them there. You read and grade each response yourself.
Long Answer Questions With Word Count Limits
Long Answer is the essay version of Short Answer, with a full rich text editor so students can format their response with bold text and bullet points. You can require a minimum word count, a maximum word count, or both, and as students type, LifterLMS shows them a live word count against those limits below the answer field.
Like Short Answer, Long Answer requires manual grading, so you’ll read each response and assign a score yourself.
Code Questions For Teaching Programming
Code lets a student submit a snippet of code as their answer, which displays back to you in a monospaced code block for grading. It’s built for LifterLMS users teaching programming, web development, or any subject where students need to submit working code rather than prose, such as writing the HTML markup for a link.
File Upload Questions For Visual Proof Of Work
Upload lets a student submit a file as their answer, and you can restrict which file types are accepted, such as limiting a question to PNG and JPEG images. It’s a strong fit for any skill you need to see rather than read, like asking a student in a yoga course to upload a photo of themselves in a specific pose for form feedback.
Because Upload only requires one question to collect a file, some LifterLMS users were already using it as a lightweight stand-in for assignments while a dedicated Assignments add-on was still in development.
Scale Questions For Ratings And Net Promoter Scores
Scale asks a student to rate something on a numeric range you define, like one to ten. You set the minimum and maximum values and can label each end, such as marking one as “no results” and ten as “got the results and much more,” so the scale means the same thing to every student.
A common use is a satisfaction or net promoter score question near the end of a course, asking how the student’s results compare to what the course promised.
Using A Scale Question To Collect Survey Data Without Affecting The Grade
Any question, not just Scale, can be set to zero points. A zero-point question still collects the student’s answer and still shows up in their results, but it doesn’t factor into their overall grade at all.
That makes it useful for adding a short survey or assessment question inside a graded quiz, such as a satisfaction rating, without skewing the actual score. LifterLMS calls this an assessment, a way to gather feedback from students who are already inside the quiz instead of sending a separate survey.
How Points And Weighted Grading Work In LifterLMS Quizzes
Every question in a LifterLMS quiz carries a point value, and those points don’t have to be equal. If a ten-question quiz has nine multiple choice questions worth one point each and a single essay question worth nine points, the essay counts for half the total grade even though it’s one question out of ten.
You don’t have to think in raw points either. As you adjust a question’s point value in the builder, LifterLMS shows you the equivalent percentage of the overall grade, so you can set weighting by feel, like knowing a question is worth roughly eight percent of the quiz, instead of doing the math yourself.
How Results Clarification Messages Help Struggling Students
Results clarification lets you attach a specific message to a question that only appears if the student answers it wrong. When they open their quiz summary afterward, that message displays automatically next to the question they missed, explaining what they got wrong or pointing them toward the right answer.
LifterLMS shows one results clarification message per question when a student answers incorrectly. This feature was originally contributed by the Yoast SEO team in an earlier version of LifterLMS.
How To Manually Grade A Quiz Attempt As An Instructor
Once a student submits a quiz with manually graded questions, like short answer, long answer, code, or upload, their attempt shows a pending review status. Find it under LifterLMS Reporting by drilling into the individual student, or from inside the course builder’s quiz view.
Opening a pending attempt shows every question and answer, including the ones that graded automatically. Click Start Review to begin assigning points to each manually graded question, and you can leave comments even on questions that graded automatically if you want to add feedback. Once every question is scored, recalculate and save the grade, and it updates on the student’s account immediately.
How To Export Student And Quiz Data From LifterLMS Reporting
If you need to hand student data to someone outside LifterLMS, like a department at a larger organization, the Students screen and the Courses screen both have an export option. Clicking export generates a CSV and emails it to the site owner once it’s ready, and that export includes each student’s name, email address, registration date, enrolled courses and memberships, and their grades.
The export doesn’t break out quiz-by-quiz answer data, so if you need to split records by department or group, the fastest approach is exporting everything, then sorting and filtering in a spreadsheet. LifterLMS’s engagement emails, which you can trigger whenever someone enrolls in a course, are another option for automatically notifying a manager or department each time a new student registers, and every engagement email includes CC fields if you just want a copy sent to someone else.
